Family is the first school for children. The growth and
development of a child depends on the parenting style adopted by the parents.
The problem that often occurs is that parents limit their
children too much, or
can be called strict parents.
Advances in technology have also influenced parenting in
this modern era. Many children spend more time in front of gadget screens than
interacting with their parents or doing healthier physical activities. This can
result in a lack of social skills, a lack of attention, and a decrease in
critical thinking skills.
This factor is a challenge for parents, but in reality many
parents let their children linger on their gadgets until they forget the time.
They do not control their children's habits with the intention that the
children are not fussy. Though this habit can lead to addiction.
Another phenomenon associated with parenting is the busyness
of parents. Many parents are so busy with work and other responsibilities that
they don't have enough time to spend quality time with their children. As a
result, children may feel neglected, under-supervised, or not getting the attention
they need.
The Benefits of
Applying Good Parenting
According to Baumrind (in Papalia, 2004), parenting is the
way parents raise children by meeting their needs, providing protection,
educating, and influencing children's behavior in everyday life.
The benefit of implementing good parenting is that it makes
children physically and mentally prosperous. parents must also pay attention to
the stages of good growth and development, so that it will have a positive
impact on the child's future.
In addition, implementing the right parenting style will
create an environment that supports and facilitates healthy and optimal
development in children.
Types of Parenting
Patterns
According to Baumrind (1991) there are four categories of
parenting that parents must know:
1. Authoritative Parenting
Authoritative or democratic parenting is the opposite of
authoritarian parenting. Parents give children freedom and encourage children
to be independent. Parents always give positive encouragement to guide their
children in a better direction. Usually children become confident, can make
decisions and are responsible for what they do.
2. Authoritarian Parenting
Authoritarian parenting is a parenting style that is very
strict, in which parents tend to impose their will on children without much
reason that their children must obey, regardless of the child's feelings.
3. Indulgent Parenting
Indulgent or permissive parenting is a type of parenting
style that parents are ignorant of their children. Whatever children want to do
is allowed by them, including things that are not good or contrary to certain
values.
4. Neglectful Parenting
Neglectful parenting is a parenting style in which parents
are not very involved in the child's life. Parents in this type of parenting
develop a feeling that other aspects of the parent's life are more important
than the child's.
How to Do Good parenting
Here are some ways parents can do in providing good
parenting patterns to children:
1. Give affection and attention
Show love and affection to children consistently. Speak
softly, play with them, and listen attentively when they talk.
2. Be a good example
Children tend to imitate the behavior of the adults around
them. Be a good example by demonstrating positive values, desired behavior, and
how to manage your emotions well.
3. Be consistent
Create rules and be consistent in their application. Kids
need clear boundaries and consistent consequences for breaking rules.
4. Effective communication
Good communication between parents and children is very
important. Listen attentively to your child, use age-appropriate language, and
ask open-ended questions to understand their feelings and thoughts. Encourage
children to speak honestly and openly. Effective communication builds trust and
strengthens the relationship between parent and child.
5. Encourage independence and responsibility
Give children the opportunity to make decisions and complete
tasks appropriate to their age. Encourage independence by assigning appropriate
responsibilities. This helps children develop self-confidence, independent
skills and a sense of responsibility towards their duties and responsibilities.
It should be noted that each type of parenting has its own
impact on children. Good parenting patterns will have positive effects on
children such as the relationship between parents and children will be closer,
communication between parents and children will become more effective, and can
also increase happiness for children so that they can increase children's
confidence to live their lives. Conversely, bad parenting patterns can also
have many negative effects on children.
